Google review notifications are the alerts that tell you a customer has just left a review on your Google Business Profile. Google sends its own for free: switch on “Customer activity” under More → Notifications in your Business Profile, or under Business → Notifications in the Google Maps app. They reach one Google account at a time, they can’t be limited to bad reviews, and they are known to go quiet for accounts that manage many listings. If several people need to hear about a 1-star review at several locations, add a review tool that sends the alert by email, Telegram or WhatsApp to everyone who should see it. In ReputeMap, a 1–3★ alert also arrives with a reply already drafted by AI that you can publish from the email without logging in.
Key takeaways
- Google’s own notifications are free and worth switching on. One switch, “Customer activity”, covers new reviews and new photos.
- They are personal, not shared. The setting belongs to the Google account that is signed in. There is no team list and no group chat.
- There is no “bad reviews only” option. A 5-star review and a 1-star review arrive the same way.
- They fail silently. There is no test button, so a broken notification looks exactly like a quiet week.
- A review tool closes those gaps. In ReputeMap, email alerts are on from the first day, Telegram connects with one tap, and WhatsApp connects with one message.
- The alert can carry the reply. A ReputeMap 1–3★ alert arrives with an AI-drafted reply: publish it from the email with no login, or from a Telegram private chat in one tap.
How do Google review notifications work?
Google can tell you about a new review in two ways: an email to your Google account, and a notification inside Google Search or the Google Maps app. Both are controlled by the same setting. Google’s help page, Manage your notifications, gives these steps:
On a computer
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the business and search Google for your business name, so your Business Profile opens.
- Select More, then Notifications.
- Find Customer activity and switch it on. Google describes it as alerts when customers leave new reviews or add photos.
On a phone
- Open the Google Maps app, signed in to the same account.
- Tap Business at the bottom right.
- Tap Notifications at the top right and check the same switch.
Two details matter in practice. First, the setting belongs to the Google account you are signed in with, so every owner or manager who wants the alerts has to do this themselves. Second, push notifications on a phone also depend on the phone allowing notifications from the Maps app, which is a setting on the phone, not in your Business Profile.
If you did all that and still hear nothing, go to the fix list: not getting Google review notifications.
Where do Google’s own notifications fall short?
For one owner with one location they are fine. The gaps show up when a second person or a second location is involved.
- One Google account at a time. Only owners and managers of the profile can get them, and each one sets them up alone. A location manager who isn’t a manager of the Google profile gets nothing, and you can’t add a plain email address like ops@yourcompany.com.
- No star filter. The switch is all or nothing. At a busy location the 1-star review that needs an answer today sits between ten 5-star ones.
- Many listings, fewer emails. Sterling Sky’s Joy Hawkins reported in 2021 that an account managing more than 100 listings stops getting review emails, whatever its settings say. The workaround she describes is splitting listings into groups of fewer than 100, each with its own Google account that forwards mail to you. In May 2025, agencies on the Local Search Forum reported review emails stopping for days, including on an account managing 75 profiles, and in early July several of them described a sudden flood of notification emails.
- Email and Google’s own apps only. No Telegram, no WhatsApp, no team chat.
- No test and no record. You can’t send yourself a test, and nothing shows who saw a review or who is handling it.
None of this is a reason to switch Google’s notifications off. It’s a reason not to make them the only thing standing between a 1-star review and your team.
Email, Telegram or WhatsApp: which channel reaches you?
Google’s own notifications are one switch per Google account, with no star filter, no group and no test. These are the three alert channels in ReputeMap, side by side.

The channel guides go deeper: Google review notifications on WhatsApp and Google review notifications in Telegram.
How do you set up review alerts in about three minutes?
- Start the trial and connect Google. Sign in with the Google account that manages your locations. It’s Google’s own sign-in screen, so ReputeMap never sees your password. If your locations sit under more than one Google login, connect each of them.
- Pick your locations. Existing reviews are imported silently. You won’t get 400 alerts about last year.
- Open Alerts and choose the star line. 1★ only, up to 2★, up to 3★ or up to 4★. Most businesses start with up to 3★, which is the default.
- Email is already on. Add the people who should know, or paste a whole list. If you add no one, alerts go to all owners and admins of the workspace.
- Connect Telegram. Press Connect Telegram, Telegram opens, tap Start. For the team, choose Add to a team group instead. On a computer there’s a QR code to scan with your phone.
- Press “Send a test alert”. One button tests every channel that is switched on and tells you, channel by channel, whether it arrived.
From then on, every new review at or below your star line sends an alert within minutes of the review being detected, once per review. The full instructions, with desktop and phone steps and a troubleshooting table, are in the docs: Negative-review alerts: email, Telegram and WhatsApp.
Who should use which channel?
- An owner with one to three locations. Email plus Telegram in a private chat. Email is the record, Telegram is the tap on the shoulder.
- An operator with managers at each location. A Telegram group with the managers in it, so everyone sees the alert and the “I’ve got it” reply underneath. Add the head-office address to email.
- A team that lives in WhatsApp. WhatsApp alerts on the owner’s phone and up to four managers’ phones — one pre-written message connects each one.
- An agency. Email to the account team, Telegram group for whoever is on call. The alert software page covers the agency angle.
- One location and a review or two a month. Google’s own notifications are enough. Switch them on and check the profile once a week.
One honest limit: in ReputeMap, alerts are set per workspace, not per location. Everyone on the list gets every location’s alerts, and each alert names the location in its first line.
What should happen after the alert?
An alert is only useful if a calm reply follows it. In ReputeMap a 1–3★ alert arrives with that reply already drafted by AI, in the language the review was written in. In the email, Review & publish reply → opens a personal, single-use link, valid for 7 days, to a page with no login: the review, the draft you can edit and one Publish to Google button; the Monday digest carries the same link. In a Telegram private chat, ✅ Publish draft posts exactly that text in one tap and ✏️ Edit & publish lets you change it first. A Telegram group gets the alert without publish buttons, and WhatsApp carries the alert only. Nothing is posted to Google until a person taps Publish. On the free trial, the reply is drafted inside the first 2 alerts; on paid plans, inside every alert. Every route from the inbox to a published reply, Google’s own included, is compared in how to reply to Google reviews from your email or phone.
Each ReputeMap alert also links straight to that review in the inbox. The alert history shows where every alert was delivered and lets a teammate press Acknowledge, so two people don’t answer the same review and nobody assumes someone else did. For the reply itself, see how to respond to negative reviews and the templates in how to reply to Google reviews. If you run several sites, the wider system is in how to manage Google reviews for multiple locations.
Where ReputeMap fits
ReputeMap is Google review software for owners and operators of 1 to 30 locations:
- Negative-review alerts by email, Telegram and WhatsApp, with the star line you choose and one test button for all of them.
- The reply drafted inside the 1–3★ alert, ready to publish from the email or a Telegram private chat.
- Every location’s reviews in one inbox, with AI reply drafts you edit and publish to Google.
- Honest review requests by email and QR code. Everyone is asked, nobody is filtered.
- One monthly report across all locations, so you see which site is slipping.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on Google review notifications?
On a computer, search Google for your business while signed in to the account that manages it, select More, then Notifications, and switch on Customer activity. On a phone, open the Google Maps app, tap Business at the bottom right, then Notifications at the top right. Google describes Customer activity as alerts when customers leave new reviews or add photos. The setting applies to the Google account you are signed in with.
Can Google send review notifications to more than one person?
Only to people who are owners or managers of the Business Profile, and each of them has to switch notifications on in their own Google account. There is no shared team setting, no group chat and no way to add a plain email address. A shift manager who is not a manager of the profile hears nothing. Review tools such as ReputeMap send the same alert to any email addresses, a Telegram group or several WhatsApp numbers instead.
Can I get Google review notifications only for bad reviews?
Not from Google. Its Customer activity switch is all or nothing: a 5-star review and a 1-star review arrive the same way. In ReputeMap you pick the line yourself: 1 star only, up to 2 stars, up to 3 stars (the default) or up to 4 stars. Only new reviews at or below that line send an alert, so a busy location does not bury the one review that needs an answer today.
Can I get Google review notifications on WhatsApp or Telegram?
Google itself only notifies by email and inside Search and Maps. ReputeMap sends negative-review alerts to Telegram through its own bot, @ReputeMapBot: press Connect, tap Start, and it works in a private chat or a team group. WhatsApp alerts use ReputeMap's own WhatsApp Business number and connect with one pre-written message. All three are on every plan; WhatsApp connects once your workspace is on full access, which is one click during the trial.
How fast do ReputeMap review alerts arrive?
An alert goes out within minutes of the review being detected when ReputeMap syncs your Google reviews. Reviews that already existed when you connected are imported silently, so you are not flooded on day one, and each review alerts once. Every alert carries the star rating, the location, the reviewer's name, the review text and a link that opens that review in the inbox, ready for a reply. A 1–3★ alert also carries a reply already drafted by AI, ready to publish from the email without a login: inside every alert on paid plans, and inside the first 2 alerts on the free trial.
Why did my Google review notification emails stop?
The usual causes are being signed in to a different Google account than the one that manages the profile, the Customer activity switch being off for that account, or the emails being filtered out of the inbox. Accounts that manage more than 100 listings are a special case: Sterling Sky reported in 2021 that Google stops sending them review emails regardless of settings. The fix list at reputemap.com/not-getting-google-review-notifications covers each cause in order.
How much does it cost to get review alerts from ReputeMap?
Email, Telegram and WhatsApp alerts are part of every ReputeMap plan: Solo at $19 a month for one location, Starter at $29 for up to 5, Growth at $79 for up to 15 and Pro at $129 for up to 30. WhatsApp connects once the workspace is on full access, which is one click during the trial. Locations are included in the price, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.
